A false witness will not go unpunished, And he who speaks lies will not escape. Proverbs 19:5. One of ancient Rome’s greatest historians was Senator Gaius Cornelius Tacitus (56-117 AD) who said, “Corruptissima republica plurimae leges,” which translates, “The more corrupt the state, the more numerous the laws.”

Western societies are under mountains of laws, mandates, and restrictions, and yet these very same societies are moving towards lawlessness. “Lawlessness” does not mean that everyone is running around plundering each other’s property or murdering each other in the streets like an apocalyptic movie, although a lot of that too seems to be happing in pockets of the world today, but the broader meaning is that a people no longer have regard for law and order applied equally to everyone.

From preschool teachers all the way up to government officials we are seeing lawlessness take root. Therefore, is it any wonder why so many students cheat on their tests or why so many young people lie to their employers when they join the workforce? Is it any wonder why there is so much character assassination of others? It’s not surprising that many people in Western societies also lie when they are brought forward as a witness. If people are cheats for something as simple as a school test, then why would they be any different when they are solicited for the truth in a business matter, official proceeding, or in a legal matter? If these same people worked themselves all the way up to the highest levels of government, then what makes citizens think that their interests will be placed above those very same self-serving officials?

When a wise person is asked the truth of a matter, then he or she is always truthful, regardless of whether it conflicts with their personal interests or not. Truth is truth. Are you wise? Are you a person of integrity? Do you uphold justice? Then if so, you will never be a false witness, and you’ll be able to look yourself in the mirror each day.

Obviously, a wise person always considers the consequences of their actions. Therefore, it behooves a believer to avoid being a false witness to keep from being punished by God. However, the motivation for a believer obeying Proverbs 19:5 goes beyond avoiding personal discomfort or some sort of dishonest gain. The reason for being a true witness, in any manner, is knowing that it pleases God, Abba (אבא) – “Daddy.” A Christian, always a witness for God, speaks the truth on all matters: life begins in the womb, there are only two sexes, marriage is between a man and a woman only, and so forth. But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear; 1 Peter 3:15.

If you haven’t received the Lord yet and want to to accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior, pray this prayer: Lord Jesus I know that I am sinner and I ask you forgive me of my sins.  I believe that you were crucified for my sins and through your blood I have redemption and salvation.  Please come into my heart and I receive you as my God.  I pray in Jesus name. AMEN
