Evangelism is one of the service pillars of the Christian faith. It’s a direct command given by our Lord Jesus which is called the Great Commission. In Matthew 28:19-20 Jesus says the following, 19 go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
We have an obligation to bring the Word of God to the world which is the definition of evangelism. The Great Commission is the order given to every Christian to engage in evangelism. As a part of our obedience to the Lord, we must take this order very seriously and make it part of our walk with the Lord. The early Church took the Great Commission very seriously and began to spread the Gospel to all parts of the world and to all nations. We can see an incremental growth and penetration of the Word among peoples of the Middle East, Europe, Asia and Africa. An interesting fact regarding evangelism in the 1st century Church is that evangelism spread due to persecution in Jerusalem. Each Apostle and many believers traveled to different parts of the known world and began teaching that Christ is the way, the truth and the life.
The key point is for us to realize that evangelism hasn’t ceased in the 21st century. With each new generation born, Christ is needed for their salvation. No matter what time we live in, the Great Commission is always application. It’s important for each generation of believers to assume their responsibility as evangelists and spread the Gospel. Whether your mission field is in a distant land or among your friends, let’s make it a conscious effort to obey our Lord in carrying out the Great Commission.
At Illuminating Faith we hope that you take the time to thoroughly study the faith principles in order to better understand the faith.
